The Portuguese capital is, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. With the tiled house facades the city has a very special flair. Therefore I can highly recommend a city trip to the capital of Portugal.

I will give you my personal tips for your Lisbon trip in this blog article: What are the most beautiful sights? Which highlights should I not miss? Lisbon is a dream city and I am sure you will love the city as much as I do.

At the end of the article I post a video about my Portugal trip. you have any suggestions that you would like to add to this guide — please write a line in the comments at the end of this post.

1. The most beautiful sights in Lisbon

Alfama
Start your Lisbon city trip in the Alfama. It is the oldest and most original district of Lisbon and lives from the flair of the countless narrow streets. Here, you should simply walk through the streets and enjoy the energy of Lisbon.
One of the most important sights in the Alfama is the cathedral Sé. It is more spectacular to look at from the outside than from the inside, but still it is worthwhile to make a short stop.

Praça do Comércio
One of the most important and impressive places is the Praça do Comércio. Especially the triumphal arch and the big equestrian statue is an eyecatcher. The dimensions of this plaza are gigantic. The great thing of the plaza is that it is open at one side to the river (Tejo). There are many street musicians playing on the guitar — you can hear the gulls and the water splashing. Simply fantastic!

Insider tip — Near the square is a great place where I drank the best sangria ever with a friend.

Tram line no. 28
A trip with the tram no. 28 is almost a must during a city trip to Lisbon.
The tram drives once straight through Lisbon and passes numerous sightseeings. You can take the tram, for example, to the Castelo de São Jorge or from there to the western side of the city, to the Bairro Alto party district.

Bairro Alto Quarter
Bairro Alta is the colourful scene quarter of Lisbon. If you want to have a drink in the evening, this is the perfect place. During the day it is quiet and relaxed in this district. There are a lot of colourful street art works on the walls.
In the evening, the district seems transformed: In the restaurants, bars and clubs there is a lot going on.

2. Lisbon culinary: Pastéis de Nata

One thing you can’t get around in Lisbon (or in Portugal in general) is the delicious pudding tartlets called Pastéis de Nata. Personally, I can dig into them — A MUST; IF YOU ARE IN PORTUGAL

3. What are the excursion destinations in the Lisbon area?

I also liked the trip to Lisbon so much because the city has many excursion destinations in the surroundings. First there is the bathing facility in Cascais and the small town of Sintra.

Sintra

Sintra, or rather parts of the castles and palaces, are UNESCO world heritage sites. If you go to Sintra, be sure to bring something to wear. I completely underestimated the temperature difference to Lisbon. Even in summer, Sintra is often foggy and uncomfortably cool. Also this very worth seeing destination is only about 40 minutes away from Lisbon and can also be easily reached by train.

Cascais

Cascais, is an old fishing village, which today has been transformed into a tourist paradise. If you’re in Lisbon for longer, I’d definitely go to the beach for a day. Cascais is easily reached by train. It leaves for example at the Cais do Sodré. The suburban train takes about 40 minutes, a ticket costs 2,15 Euro.

My conclusion:

I think you have to been there to understand and feel what I mean. This city has a very special magic that I have never experienced anywhere else.

I love the spirit of Lisbon!
